Heads-up for the Ubuntu community! The release of Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, initially expected this week, has been postponed by one week. The new target release date is February 20th, 2025.
Canonical developers identified a critical issue where some Ubuntu flavor images were incorrectly built without the intended Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel. This HWE kernel, based on Linux 6.11, is crucial for providing updated hardware support in point releases, ensuring compatibility with newer systems.
While the main Ubuntu ISO was correctly built, the team decided to delay the release to ensure consistency across all flavors. Rebuilding and re-testing all ISO images is underway to guarantee the correct kernel is included.
This delay, though minor, highlights the importance of rigorous testing in software releases, especially for long-term support distributions like Ubuntu LTS. Users planning fresh installs can still utilize the current Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS ISO, which includes Linux kernel 6.8.
Existing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users are already receiving the HWE stack update (Linux 6.11 and updated Mesa) and a base-files package update, which will reflect version 24.04.2 LTS in system settings.
Stay tuned for the official release of Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS next week!
